The idea of the mosaic wall to celebrate Hanoi's 1000 year anniversary was the brain child of artist Nguyen Thu Thuy who won a Hanoi architecture contest to transform the dyke which prevents flooding from the Red River. Bringing the idea to life involved 20 Vietnamese painters, 100 craftsmen, 15 international artists, 50 art students and 500 children. The pottery for the project came from the famous pottery village Bat Trang- just across the Red River from Hanoi and across the road from Bob and Karen.
This beautiful wall was officially named as the longest mosaic mural by the Guinness Book of World records in October of 2010. The official length was 3,850 linear feet, or four kilometers, about 2.5 miles.
A total of seven million ceramic pieces were used to create the mosaic, which is divide into 21 sections or themes. These include representations of the different sections of the country, the 54 traditional groups, historical events and traditions of Thang Long or ancient Hanoi, traditional pottery, traditional architecture, children, wildlife, flora and fauna. Although this is the most well known of Thuy's work, it is certainly not her only public piece of art. She was recently awarded the silver trophy of the A'Design Awards in Italy for her Mosaic Mirror House Project. For this award there were 1960 other nominations. The Mosaic Mirror House is located in the Thong Nhat (Reunion) Park. She designed the project using the colors and shapes from her images of Ha Long Sea and the waves of the Spratley Islands. The Spratley Islands, you may remember, are facing controversy about ownership. Mirror House
